A very arm-locked themed night at The MAC during a couple of hours of grappling

We had a busy and fun-filled morning and evening at The MAC at Haworth today with the normal schedule of classes keeping our students flooding through the door.

The morning’s focus was stand-up, with the group working their way through a number of rounds on the Bulgarian bag and battle rope before getting down to some extensive padwork. The hour concluded with some light (and heavy) sparring.

The evening began with our Kids MMA class, with the group’s focus being on mount escapes. Earlier in the hour they worked their way through padwork and concluded with the always fun “sock game”.

The grappling was spread over two hours, with the entire group chipping in for a second hour. The first hour focused on the standing arm-lock and elbow escapes from the mount, and the second on standing guillotines and arm-locks from the mount. The session finished with a little rolling (grappling sparring).

A big well done to everyone who attended the centre today including Adam, Roxanne, Ewa, Tony, Andrea, Ryan, Ben, Chris and Alain.

A big shout out to our sponsors, The Fleece Inn as well.

See you next time on the mat…

Ricco Rodriguez makes his position as the head of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at The MAC at Haworth public

Former UFC heavyweight champion and third degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) Black Belt, Ricco Rodriguez has today made his position official at The MAC at Haworth, a move that will certainly make the small village gym stand out among the rest.

Owner and head coach of The MAC at Haworth, Michael Faulkner said:

“It’s fantastic for the students of The MAC and those in the local area that we will officially be under the banner of the ‘Ricco Rodriguez System’, a truly great Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt.”

“I have personally known Ricco for many years, from his days at the Wolfslair, and his advice was a great help when we created our own unofficial in-house grappling program a couple of years ago.”

“We look forward to welcoming him to our facility for the very first time in the coming months and building on our relationship long into the future.”

In the Jiu-Jitsu world Rodriguez began training alongside the likes of Jean Jacques Machado and went on to most notably win the gold medal at the first ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship in 1998 in the +99kg division. He returned the year after to take bronze in the Absolute division and in 2000 picked up the silver medal in the +99kg division.

“Suave”, as he’s otherwise know, made his MMA debut back in 1997 and after a brief spell with PRIDE over in Japan soon made his way to the UFC octagon. He reeled off five straight wins, defeating the likes of Andrei Arlovski, Jeff Monson and the legendary Randy Couture to capture the UFC heavyweight title. Rodriguez would go on to have a storied MMA career spanning almost twenty years, compiling a 53-25 (1) record.

Grip breaks for arm-lock finishes the big focus of tonight’s Adults MMA class at The MAC

We had a muggy evening at The MAC at Haworth this evening with our regular program of Kids MMA, Mixed Stand-up and Adults MMA on the menu. Continue reading to find out what went down…

The Kids MMA class was in full effect with twelve children making it in. After the initial warm-up we got into our striking drills before transitioning to the guard passing game that was such a hit the week before. After that it was another situation that required a slightly different mount escape before combining the two to finish.

The adults stand-up class was quiet at first but soon picked up. We looked at a nice axe kick-side kick combination before getting down to some padwork. The session ended with a little light sparring.

Final class of the night was the Adults MMA class and after a quick warm-up it was onto the wrestling drill which everyone loved to hate last week. If they weren’t tired enough it was time to lace up the gloves and engage in a little stand-up sparring before looking at a little technique, this session being grip breaks from the arm-lock.

A big well done to everyone who attended the centre today including Georgina, Scott, Ebun, Chris and Graham.

A big shout out to our sponsors, The Fleece Inn as well.

Street-fight sparring and triangle chokes no the menu at The MAC this Monday

We had a sweltering Monday at The MAC at Haworth today with our regular program of morning and evening classes going on despite the massive heat.

The morning session began with the regular Bulgarian bag warm-up before switching it up with a little light rolling (grappling sparring). Taking things on a stage further we moved on to “street-fight sparring”, allowing for unexpected strikes from the top and bottom positions to be thrown as we “keep it real”.

The evening Kids MMA class began with the animal based warm-up before taking them on the pads to improve their basic knowledge of striking. The focus then changed to grappling and our new guard passing drill before mixing it in with the game the group knows well.

The last class of the day was our grappling class and after looking at how to deal with a super aggressive opponent on the feet, we looked at a couple of ways to apply the triangle choke including a driving opponent. The session finished with a little light rolling.

A big well done to everyone who attended the centre today including Adam, Roxanne, Mark, Ewa, Ryan, Ben and Chris.

A big shout out to our sponsors, The Fleece Inn as well.

See you next time on the mat…

Half-guard sweeps/submissions revisited during this morning’s grappling class at The MAC

It was a busy, hot and sweaty morning at The MAC at Haworth today with our usual mix of pads, grappling and Kids MMA on the menu.

First up was our hour pad session, a chance for members to sharpen their striking skills as they punch, kick, knee and elbow the focus pads. The final fifteen minutes was reserved for sparring as they put everything into practice.

Next was our weekend grappling class and we took the chance to look at a scenario from the bottom of half guard. Once gaining lockdown and the underhooks we explored creating a favorable angle before executing the electric chair sweep/submission.

The last class of the morning was our massively popular Kids MMA class and after a brief warm-up and a little padwork we put them through their paces with our new guard passing game. The technical portion of the class looked at a mount escape, rolling our opponent off of us before finishing with a few fun games.

A big well done to everyone who attended the centre today including Adam, Ewa, Roxanne, Paul, Ebun, Michelle, Ryan and Paul.

A big shout out to our sponsors, The Fleece Inn as well.

Practically a full house for grappling and MMA tonight at The MAC at Haworth

We had a busy Thursday night at The MAC at Haworth this evening with our trio of classes bringing almost a record number of people through our doors over a three and a half hour period.

The Kids MMA class kicked off the night in style with the group brushing up on their padwork and self defence techniques, the latter in the form of wrist releases and standing in base. We added to the mix engaging our opponent in the clinch, a powerful weapon which will come into it’s own in future weeks.

The grappling class was next up and the high turn-out was in for a treat as we looked at guillotine chokes from standing, as well as straight arm-locks from the mount. The busy class was treated to a little light rolling to end, with a few of the MMA guys joining in.

The MMA class swung into action at 7.30pm with a shorter than normal warm up before getting straight into our wrestling drill, a big focus of things this week. The technical portion of the class focused on mount escapes, this week looking to trap the arm and leg on one side before rolling them.

A big well done to everyone who attended the centre today including David, Adam, Chris, Michelle, Paul, Ed, Georgina, Heidi, Paul, Richard, Matt, Graham, Chris, Olly, Joe and Ben.

A big shout out to our sponsors, The Fleece Inn as well.

“Evolve Your Game” t-shirts start rolling off the presses

Our newest t-shirt range has swung into production this week, giving members chance to wear something different from the gym’s logo. The “Evolve Your Game” shirt comes in four different colours (black, red, pink and yellow) and features the evolution of man through the ages.

The cool part for us is the last stage is customisable, with thirty eight different options. You can pick anything from Mario himself to R2D2, a zombie to the atom bomb. The shirt is priced at £20.00 and is available to order either at The MAC in person or through our website.

Wrestling drills form an exhausting part of tonight’s Adults MMA class at The MAC

We had a fun-filled Tuesday night at The MAC at Haworth this evening, with our usual trio of classes putting many of our members through a punishing hour or two.

First up was the Kids MMA session and with three of the group still having to complete the latest round of gradings we had to take a minor detour. Once they were carried out we moved onto our latest focus which is guard passing and regaining guard, with the group interchanging furiously in different positions. A big well done to Abigail, Phoebe and Aimee on passing their gradings.

The Mixed Stand-up class tonight focused on the hands, looking at how to draw the guard low with hooks to the body before switching back up high. We also looked at a nice little wrist-to-wrist connection that can leave our opponent open to a body shot. The hour finished with a little sparring and body conditioning.

Last up was the Adults MMA class which began with our usual warm-up which included squats and scrambles. An old-school wrestling drill was in full effect instead of padwork tonight, giving the class a chance to work on takedowns and their takedown defence. The technical portion of the class focused on arm-drags, not only from standing but from the butterfly and closed guards. The session and the night ended with a little rolling.

A big well done to everyone who attended the centre today including Michael, Georgina, Richard, Ebun, Paul and Matt.

A big shout out to our sponsors, The Fleece Inn as well.

Defending punches from the guard position the big focus of tonight’s grappling class at The MAC

We had another busy day at The MAC at Haworth today, with our usual mix of stand-up in the morning and a grappling flavor during tonight’s sessions on the mat.

This mornings session focused on utilising the hands to close the distance and box in close, something that allows the uncorking of a backhand right hook. The session began with our usual Bulgarian bag warm-up.

The evenings program began with our Kids MMA session with the final member of this class having the chance to work through the latest grading. Basic strikes and mount/back mount controls was the focus and we’re pleased to say Sonny passed with flying colours.

The last session of the evening was our grappling class, with the initial focus being guillotine defence from standing. Once the group felt comfortable with that we moved onto how to protect yourself from a wild striking opponent who is inside your guard, something every true grappler should be comfortable with.

A big well done to everyone who attended the centre today including Adam, Ewa, Tony, Ryan, Ben and Heidi.

A big shout out to our sponsors, The Fleece Inn as well.

Sunday’s children complete their MMA gradings, seven gain belt promotions

It was a hectic Sunday morning at The MAC at Haworth today with the usual trio of classes keeping our students flocking through the door, which included a jam-packed Kids MMA session.

We started with an hour on the pads, giving those adults who are a little stressed with the weeks event a chance to punch, kick, knee and elbow the focus pads before finishing off with a little stand-up sparring.

The grappling session was a little low on numbers today but that didn’t stop those who did turn up working on a few things from the mount position. The first half of the session was all about escaping, before looking at a few attacks to finish.

The last hour was the kids session and having graded half of the group next week it was time to look at those who slipped through the net. We started the session with our regular warm-up before moving on to basic and advanced striking combinations. The grappling side of things was intense for many of those being tested, looking at wrist releases, takedowns, guard passes, mount controls, back mount controls and three submissions. We’re pleased to reveal that everyone being tested today passed. A big congratulations to Harley, Jensen, Ziggy, Charlie, Ellie-May, Kylie and Bobby.

A big well done to everyone who attended the centre including Mark, Michelle, Michael and Finn.

A big shout out to our sponsors, The Fleece Inn as well.
