TAC masterclass gives MMA students a new edge on the ground during tonight’s class at The MAC

We had another massive Tuesday night at The MAC at Haworth tonight, with our regular program of Kids MMA, Mixed Stand-up and Adults MMA taking the floor.

We kicked it off with the little ones, with the group tonight going through their paces in the warm-up and striking obstacle course early on. We then looked at a standing headlock defence, using their lack of base to off balance them. The session ended with our regular points based sparring game.

The stand-up class was next up, with the group working their way through three basic kicking combinations which included round kicks, push kicks, oblique kicks and side kicks. After three rounds on the pads each we got down and dirty with fourteen rounds of sparring.

The MMA class was last up with the group engaging in a little squats and scrambles warm-up before jumping back on the pads. The technical portion of the class focused around a TAC (or twisting arm control) masterclass, with the group looking at arm-lock and belly down finishes. The night ended with a little sparring on the ground.

A big well done to everyone who attended the centre today including Roxanne, Paul, Ben, Georgina, Michael, Scott, Mark and Chris.

A big shout out to our sponsors, The Fleece Inn as well.

See you next time on the mat…

Overhook submission series from the guard visited during tonights MMA class at The MAC

We had another action packed Tuesday night at The MAC at Haworth this evening, with our regular mix of Kids MMA, Mixed Stand-up and Adults MMA filling the schedule.

We kicked it off with our older kids class, putting them through their paces with the regular warm-up and the striking obstacle course. We then transitioned onto arm-drags from standing, as well as a knee-tap takedown from the rear-clinch. The main focus of the session was the guard passing drill which then moved onto our points based sparring game.

The stand-up class for adults began with a little shadow boxing, after which we quickly moved on to six rounds on the focus pads. We had thirty minutes left in the session so decided to get down to some good old sparring, allowing the students to punch, kick and knee each other in a controlled manner.

The final class of the night was the MMA class and after the warm-up we got down to some wrestling drills which include a little padwork. The technical portion of the class focused on an overhook guard and a series of submissions that you can hit from there, whether it be a triangle, kimura or omoplata. We finished with a little rolling.

A big well done to everyone who attended the centre today including Charlie, Jessica, Jasmine, Ben, Paul, Georgina, Roxanne, Mark, Ebun, Scott, Chris, Matt and Graham.

A big shout out to our sponsors, The Fleece Inn as well.

See you next time on the mat…

Crucial headlock escapes taught during tonight’s grappling class at The MAC

We had a busy Monday at The MAC at Haworth today, with our regular program of morning and evening classes keeping our members flocking through the doors.

Our day started with a little striking, with the group beginning the session with the Bulgarian bag warm-up. We got straight down to it with some light sparring, and even had time to combine a little grappling sparring to boot.

The evening started with one of our Kids MMA classes, with the little ones working their way through the regular animal based warm-up before testing their focus. The striking obstacle course was in full swing before we focused on mount escapes during the technical portion.

Next up was our evening grappling class, with the group looking at double leg takedowns, depending on our opponents behavior. We then transitioned onto looking at primary headlock escapes on the ground, a critical maneuver if you find yourself stuck on the bottom.

A big well done to everyone who attended the centre today including Adam, Ewa, Roxanne, Tony, Andrea, Michelle, Roxanne, Ryan, Paul, Ben and Chris.

A big shout out to our sponsors, The Fleece Inn as well.

Single-leg takedowns on the menu this Tuesday evening at The MAC at Haworth

We had a busy, busy, busy night at The MAC at Haworth last night with our regular schedule of classes on the menu, Kids MMA, Mixed Stand-up and Adults MMA.

The kids class began with our regular warm-up before transitioning to our ever growing obsticle course which incorporates a little padwork. The focus of the grappling this session was mixing in the two previously learned mount escapes, taking advantage of our opponents hands either being on us or on the ground.

The adults stand-up class got underway with a little shadow boxing before focusing on strikes from the clinch position, both the Thai clinch and single collar. The group then got down to some light sparring to finish.

The MMA class was in full swing to finish the evening, with the usual “squats and scrambles” warm-up before moving onto some padwork. The technical portion of the evening was taken up by single leg takedowns, looking at the standard entry and possible transitions, as well as a low variation. The night ended with a few rounds of rolling.

A big well done to everyone who attended the centre yesterday including Paul, Michael, Jessica, Ben, Scott and Paul.

A big shout out to our sponsors, The Fleece Inn as well.

A very arm-locked themed night at The MAC during a couple of hours of grappling

We had a busy and fun-filled morning and evening at The MAC at Haworth today with the normal schedule of classes keeping our students flooding through the door.

The morning’s focus was stand-up, with the group working their way through a number of rounds on the Bulgarian bag and battle rope before getting down to some extensive padwork. The hour concluded with some light (and heavy) sparring.

The evening began with our Kids MMA class, with the group’s focus being on mount escapes. Earlier in the hour they worked their way through padwork and concluded with the always fun “sock game”.

The grappling was spread over two hours, with the entire group chipping in for a second hour. The first hour focused on the standing arm-lock and elbow escapes from the mount, and the second on standing guillotines and arm-locks from the mount. The session finished with a little rolling (grappling sparring).

A big well done to everyone who attended the centre today including Adam, Roxanne, Ewa, Tony, Andrea, Ryan, Ben, Chris and Alain.

A big shout out to our sponsors, The Fleece Inn as well.

Grip breaks for arm-lock finishes the big focus of tonight’s Adults MMA class at The MAC

We had a muggy evening at The MAC at Haworth this evening with our regular program of Kids MMA, Mixed Stand-up and Adults MMA on the menu. Continue reading to find out what went down…

The Kids MMA class was in full effect with twelve children making it in. After the initial warm-up we got into our striking drills before transitioning to the guard passing game that was such a hit the week before. After that it was another situation that required a slightly different mount escape before combining the two to finish.

The adults stand-up class was quiet at first but soon picked up. We looked at a nice axe kick-side kick combination before getting down to some padwork. The session ended with a little light sparring.

Final class of the night was the Adults MMA class and after a quick warm-up it was onto the wrestling drill which everyone loved to hate last week. If they weren’t tired enough it was time to lace up the gloves and engage in a little stand-up sparring before looking at a little technique, this session being grip breaks from the arm-lock.

A big well done to everyone who attended the centre today including Georgina, Scott, Ebun, Chris and Graham.

A big shout out to our sponsors, The Fleece Inn as well.

Street-fight sparring and triangle chokes no the menu at The MAC this Monday

We had a sweltering Monday at The MAC at Haworth today with our regular program of morning and evening classes going on despite the massive heat.

The morning session began with the regular Bulgarian bag warm-up before switching it up with a little light rolling (grappling sparring). Taking things on a stage further we moved on to “street-fight sparring”, allowing for unexpected strikes from the top and bottom positions to be thrown as we “keep it real”.

The evening Kids MMA class began with the animal based warm-up before taking them on the pads to improve their basic knowledge of striking. The focus then changed to grappling and our new guard passing drill before mixing it in with the game the group knows well.

The last class of the day was our grappling class and after looking at how to deal with a super aggressive opponent on the feet, we looked at a couple of ways to apply the triangle choke including a driving opponent. The session finished with a little light rolling.

A big well done to everyone who attended the centre today including Adam, Roxanne, Mark, Ewa, Ryan, Ben and Chris.

A big shout out to our sponsors, The Fleece Inn as well.

Wrestling drills form an exhausting part of tonight’s Adults MMA class at The MAC

We had a fun-filled Tuesday night at The MAC at Haworth this evening, with our usual trio of classes putting many of our members through a punishing hour or two.

First up was the Kids MMA session and with three of the group still having to complete the latest round of gradings we had to take a minor detour. Once they were carried out we moved onto our latest focus which is guard passing and regaining guard, with the group interchanging furiously in different positions. A big well done to Abigail, Phoebe and Aimee on passing their gradings.

The Mixed Stand-up class tonight focused on the hands, looking at how to draw the guard low with hooks to the body before switching back up high. We also looked at a nice little wrist-to-wrist connection that can leave our opponent open to a body shot. The hour finished with a little sparring and body conditioning.

Last up was the Adults MMA class which began with our usual warm-up which included squats and scrambles. An old-school wrestling drill was in full effect instead of padwork tonight, giving the class a chance to work on takedowns and their takedown defence. The technical portion of the class focused on arm-drags, not only from standing but from the butterfly and closed guards. The session and the night ended with a little rolling.

A big well done to everyone who attended the centre today including Michael, Georgina, Richard, Ebun, Paul and Matt.

A big shout out to our sponsors, The Fleece Inn as well.

Defending punches from the guard position the big focus of tonight’s grappling class at The MAC

We had another busy day at The MAC at Haworth today, with our usual mix of stand-up in the morning and a grappling flavor during tonight’s sessions on the mat.

This mornings session focused on utilising the hands to close the distance and box in close, something that allows the uncorking of a backhand right hook. The session began with our usual Bulgarian bag warm-up.

The evenings program began with our Kids MMA session with the final member of this class having the chance to work through the latest grading. Basic strikes and mount/back mount controls was the focus and we’re pleased to say Sonny passed with flying colours.

The last session of the evening was our grappling class, with the initial focus being guillotine defence from standing. Once the group felt comfortable with that we moved onto how to protect yourself from a wild striking opponent who is inside your guard, something every true grappler should be comfortable with.

A big well done to everyone who attended the centre today including Adam, Ewa, Tony, Ryan, Ben and Heidi.

A big shout out to our sponsors, The Fleece Inn as well.

Windy Wednesday sees members work on their footlocks during our grappling hour

It was a windy Wednesday morning today at The MAC at Haworth, with our members going through their paces during a two hour session split evenly between striking and grappling.

The first hour focused on stand-up, with the group utilising the Bulgarian bag for our usual warm-up routine before transitioning into six-three minute rounds on the focus pads. The hour ended with fifteen minutes of sparring, switching opponents after each minute.

The second hour was on the ground, with the group looking at footlocks. I know it’s not IBJJF but hey-ho. First we looked at a more advanced way of controlling our opponent before moving on to leg locks which leave our opponent in a more desperate situation every time we transition.

A big well done to everyone who attended the centre today including Kath, Mark, Roxanne, Ewa, Adam, Ebun and Andrea.

A big shout out to our sponsors, The Fleece Inn as well.
