Flow rolling the order of the day as everyone starts to get the point… or two

We had another action-packed Sunday morning today at The MAC at Haworth, with flow rolling the order of the day in both the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Kids MMA classes.

The morning was kicked off by an hour of pad-work, with a number of people making the trek over from Bradford for the session. Punches, kicks and knees were thrown for the duration, with everyone getting a good workout.

Next up was our popular Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (no-gi) session, with the group looking at counters to the scissor and butterfly sweep which sees you wind up in deep half-guard on the way to taking your opponents back. The session was finished off with an extended rolling period, which saw the group attempt to take a more relaxed approach and go with the flow.

The final hour was our Kids MMA class which saw the boys and girls tackle a pesky runaway horse, practice their kicks and punches, as well as work on their focus (although they seem to have cracked the last bit). Finally they had the chance to roll for the last fifteen minutes, gaining points for gaining both the mount and guard positions.

Well done to everyone who attended including Adam, Roxanne, Alex and Chris.

A busy Sunday morning sees side mount controls and escapes come to the fore

Another busy Sunday morning was had today at The MAC at Haworth, with the day seemingly centered around both controlling side mount from top position and looking to escape it from the bottom.

First up we had our 9.00am pad session, giving members a chance to improve their striking (punches, kicks, knees and elbows), as well as their ability to hold pads for their team mates. The session ended with ten minutes boxing sparring, something that might remain in future weeks.

The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu session was at 10.00am, with the class looking at how to correctly position themselves if someone is passing their guard in order to take advantage of the position to it’s fullest. From there we looked at a couple of endings, including how to jump to a triangle choke.

Finally it was the turn of the little ones and our massively popular Kids MMA class. This week we continued to work on our hooks and uppercuts before moving on to controlling side mount from the top by preventing our opponents from rolling us or pushing us off.

A big well done to everyone who attended including Adam, Ewa, Roxie, Matthew and Natasha.

See you next time on the mats…

Modified mount escapes and junior rolling the focus this morning at The MAC at Haworth

Students had another successful morning improving themselves and their skills at The MAC at Haworth this blustery Sunday morning, with modified mount escapes and junior rolling forming important parts of two very different lessons.

First up we had our early morning pad session, with a small handful braving the empty roads and lingering snow to continue to work on their punches, kicks, knees and elbows with each other.

Next up we opened our doors to the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students, this week looking at a standard way of escaping the modified mount before moving on to two more highly effective and energy efficient escapes from the same position.

Finally we held our massively popular Kids MMA class, the first on a Sunday since last weeks grading’s took place. This week we put more responsibility on the students to partner with each other to continue their learning, as well as allowing them to roll in a competitive was for the very first time. Good job kids.

A big well done to everyone who attended including Cat and Chris.

See you all next week on the mat…

Pad work, advanced sweeps from guard and kids gradings carried out this morning at The MAC at Haworth

We were open this Sunday morning for our regular classes at “The MAC at Haworth”, with our members piling in for the pad session, BJJ hour and Kids MMA (which for this week included a grading).

First up was the pad session with a couple of regular faces popping over from Bradford to hit, kick, elbow and knee the pads for an hour, sharpening their skills in the process.

Next up was the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class, with the group looking at an advanced way of setting up the scissor sweep, how to use it to switch to the other side if it gets stuffed and how to take advantage of your opponent countering the double ankle sweep.

Lastly we had our little ones in for the Kids MMA class, with four of our students eligible for their first gradings. We had a super well behaved class, with the children working their way through fitness and focus drills, as well as showing off their understanding of striking and grappling. We’re pleased to report that all four children passed with flying colours.

A big well done to everyone who attended including Ewa, Adam, Cat, Chris and Matthew. Congratulations once again to those children that passed their gradings, the future is bright.

Leg-lock combinations and grading readiness the focus this Sunday at Haworth

It was a little quiet this Sunday morning at the Fusion Martial Arts Centre at Haworth, but that didn’t stop our members that turned up enjoying what was on offer from our instructors including how to combine leg-locks to finish our opponent.

First up was our pad session, giving people a chance to work off the weeks frustrations by hitting, kicking, kneeing and elbowing the pads.

Soon after we switched to our no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu hour, demonstrating how to combine straight-footlocks, heel-hooks and knee-bars as we look to tie our opponent in a knot.

Finally it was the turn of the kids, and with only one week to go until they are put through their paces during the first ever Sunday grading, we had the sharpening up on their basics.

A big well done to everyone who turned up including Dwight and Chris. See you next week…

Fusion MAC @ Haworth’s first Halloween Spooktacular a massive success

Today the Fusion Martial Arts Centre at Haworth held it’s first annual Halloween Spooktacular fundraiser, with those involved looking to raise over £400 for a local childrens centre, Tree Tops. Read on to find out exactly what went down on the morning and whether we reached our goal…

The morning was kicked off with our regular Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class, as Dracula taught some “crab guard” techniques to a zombie, radioactive skeleton, Shaun of the Dead and Harley Quinn. The hour ticked by and soon the hoards of little zombies, witches, skeletons and such descended on the centre.

We started our little party off with half an hour of pad work, followed by a bunch of spooky themed games. Of course we had to play one of our favorite games, Zombies, before teaming them up with adults to give the morning a competitive edge, well done Team Zombie on the win.

Finally the raffle was a roaring success, with all prizes being drawn for in front of an excited audience. If you were unable to attend, you still might have won. A list of ticket numbers will be published shortly for unclaimed prizes. A big thanks to everyone who gave generously either directly to the fund, buying raffle tickets and especially to those donating prizes including The Black Bull, The Sun, Mill Hey Brew House, Mrs Beightons Sweet Shop and Mark Davis.

I’d like to thanks all my undead helpers on the day (Adam, Roxanne, Ewa, Chris and Matt), as well as my wife, mother-in-law and Adele. Last but by no means least I want to give a special mention to Michelle who was unable to attend on the morning but went over and above in terms of selling raffle tickets, approaching businesses for prizes and generally organising the day. A special lady.

So here’s where the fund stands at right now… (drum roll)… £549.

Thank-you everyone again and I’ll be sure to keep you all posted with regards to dropping off the check to the childrens centre and what they decide to spend the proceeds on.

High-mount arm-locks and devastating shoulder pressure taught during today’s BJJ session

A chilly Sunday morning at the Fusion Martial Arts Centre at Haworth was kicked off with the normal pad session, combining punches, kicks, knees, elbows and even the occasional clinch entry.

That was followed up with our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu hour, with our students looking at a nice little trick to counter the elbow escape, an impossible to defend arm-lock from the high mount and devastating shoulder pressure from side mount.

Last but by no means least was the turn of the kids who seem to be going from strength to strength with their gradings just around the corner. Their kicks and punches were on point this week, as was their grappling and focus. An excellent session.

Well done to all of those that attended including Adam, Roxanne and Ewa. Please remember to reserve October 30th in your calenders for our two hour “Halloween Spooktacular” fundraiser (10am-12pm) in aid of a local children’s centre. A link to our Just Giving page can be found here…
